Wilder Outpost
Wilder Outpost at dusk: a drive-up motel court below Cannon Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Franconia · White Mountains, New Hampshire

A basecamp for people who came here to do something

Hike Franconia Ridge. Ski Cannon. Climb, ride, run, skin, explore. Wilder Outpost exists to make that day easier — and to give you somewhere worth coming back to when it's done.

01 — The idea

Your bedroom is where you sleep. The Outpost is where you live.

We borrowed the social behavior of a very good hostel — communal tables, spontaneous conversation, solo travelers who feel immediately comfortable, people working alongside each other — and kept everything else: private rooms, real beds, real showers, a door you drive up to and park in front of.

This is not a retreat and it isn't a spa. It's a basecamp for independent active travelers: solo, paired, in threes, on a Friday night or a Tuesday afternoon between calls.

Wilder Outpost is part of the Wilder collection of properties.

The commons inside the main house: long communal tables, laptops, a lit stone fireplace and vintage White Mountains trail maps

02 — The main house

The commons is the product

The main level isn't a lobby and it isn't only a restaurant. It's the heart of the property — a kitchen and bar, a self-service market, huge communal tables, couches, a fireplace, trail maps on the wall, a weather and snow board by the door, and Wilder merchandise on the shelf.

7:00 AMTrail planning

Coffee on, laptops open, everyone standing around the weather and snow board deciding whether it's the Ridge or the notch today.

11:00 AMMountain coworking

Tuesday midmorning and the room is a lodge office — big tables, outlets everywhere, serious Wi-Fi, and somewhere other than your bedroom to spend four hours.

4:00 PMBack from Cannon

Skis racked in the gear room, boots on the dryers, a beer or an NA out of the self-serve market, fireplace going, music on.

9:00 PMThe long table

Ten people who arrived alone, sitting together. Cards, maps, plans for tomorrow. Nobody organized it.

03 — Shared infrastructure

The gear room

Most hotels treat gear as a problem. Here it's the amenity. Wet boots, muddy bikes, sharp edges and damp layers all have a purpose-built place to go, so the rooms stay dry and the day starts faster tomorrow.

  • Ski & snowboard racks
  • Boot dryers
  • Bike storage & repair stand
  • Hydration + fill station
  • Lockers
  • Laundry & drying room

04 — The rooms

Thirty drive-up rooms. Utilitarian on purpose.

Park at your door, drop your pack, sleep extremely well. We spend where you feel it and skip what you'd never notice. Old wood stays. Imperfections stay. Vintage White Mountains photography, old Cannon trail maps, industrial hooks, wool blankets.

Not cheap. Intentional.

  • Excellent mattresses and bedding
  • Strong showers, strong lighting
  • Hooks everywhere, benches for gear
  • Durable floors built for ski boots
  • Charging at every surface
  • Blackout shades and very good Wi-Fi

Experiences

Over luxury

Remote-capable

At least sometimes

Solo travelers, couples, friends and small groups who hike or ski regularly, appreciate good design, and don't need white-glove service — but do want community and infrastructure they can't get from an Airbnb or a generic motel.

06 — The Wilder collection

Two properties. One guest. Two entirely different reasons to come.

Retreat

Gale River House

Couples, cottages, the river, quiet, privacy. Polished and unhurried.

Basecamp

Wilder Outpost

Active, social, energetic, communal, a little rugged. Built around the day you came here to have.

Both are part of the Wilder collection of properties — the same customer universe, deliberately different stay occasions, so the two houses in Franconia complement each other rather than compete.
